The Rescue Dogs In The Northern Regions Of Canada

In many ways the dogs of Northern Canada have to be the most resilient breed, they survive on what most rescues consider,"the will to live and little else." On their own they forage for food, sustain their own canine communities and live in extreme weather conditions. Without the availability of spay and neuter programs these dogs have reached unmanageable numbers leaving them susceptable to dog shoots in order to reduce populations. Without vaccinations, diseases such as parvo, rabies and distemper can run rampid among dog packs. Veterinary care is a luxury not a standard in Northern Canadian regions. Many dogs are left to suffer from illness, gun shot wounds and infection leaving rescues feeling abandoned and helpless to offer assistance to the many as they only have enough resources to save the few.

Norway House (Manitoba),Manitoba German Shepherd Rescue, Iqaluit Humane Sciety (Nunavut), Happy Valley Goose Bay SPCA (Labrador) are just a few Rescues in the Northern regions of Canada dealing with overwhelming daily abuse, neglect, surrender, stray overpopulation and disease in Northern dog populations. Without Government funding nearly all animal rescues rely on donations, fundraising and volunteers to care for the dogs who come into rescue.

Any given week there are upwards of thirty plus dogs and puppies in the care of an Animal Rescue in Canada dealing with Northern dog overpopulation. All animals require veterinary care, food, possible surgery for injury; all a huge expense. There are varying degrees of care required on an individual basis, some require very little vetting while others need extensive treatment. Most Northern communities have a working relationship with animal rescues who can assist with extraction, transport, fostering and medical care of animals who are sick or injured. These rescues are not instantaneous, they require planning, time, resources and most importantly; volunteers. Animal Rescue is not a paid position, it is done out of concern and love for those who through no fault of their own simply exist.

Beyond the concerns for the health and welfare of rescue animals lies the overwhelming stress on those involved in animal rescue. Often, due to financial strain volunteers become mentally and emotionally drained while trying to provide even the most basic medical care to the dogs that need assistance. Transportation, dog food, cleaning supplies, fosters, volunteers, medical supplies and treatment are only a few of the aspects that rescues source on a daily basis. Literally begging for public assistance, all too often veterinary care is paid for by rescuers and those within their rescue community. The population of Labrador is equivalent to that of Bedford, Nova Scotia and herein lies the dilemma. How do you draw resources from a sparse population? Without working with rescues in southern regions of Canada for fundraising, veterinary care and outsourced adoptions, the dogs of the North would be at a far greater disadvantage then they already are.

The welfare of dogs in the Territories of Canada is an issue few truly know of, although, due to social media rescues in the North are now receiving much needed attention. The major issues facing Northern rescues are serious ones for the dogs; dog shoots have become the norm even though not accepted as humane. Overpopulation can lead to a pack mentality in dog communities, children can become unsuspecting victims of a random maulling and panic for quick resolution takes form in a bullet. Rabies, Distemper and Parvo can be controlled through vaccination, however, most Northern Canadian communities have limited access to veterinary resources nor can they afford it. The dogs outweigh the human populations in remote regions and the citizens (most not all) try to feed and care for the strays within these communities as best they can.

To some, "A dog is JUST a dog," to many they are living, breathing creatures entitled to the love, commitment, protection and justice we would expect for ourselves as citizens not just here in Canada but in any country. How we choose to protect and care for those who can not speak or do for themselves carries a great impact on us as people. Lobbying for updated Animal Protection and Welfare legislation is an exhausting, tedious commitment but essential when working toward positive change. Sharing the knowledge and resources we have with others promotes awareness as to the rights and commitment animals deserve. Education is critical to aid in animal wellness, promote spay and neuter programs in your area, offer your knowledge on what it means to be a responsible pet owner.

Through social media the un-heard, un-seen, un-named and un-wanted are now being offered a voice through the hope and humanity of countless animal rescues and citizens throughout Canada. There are many ways in which you can make a difference, contact any one of the Animal Rescues in your region to see how you can help, no gesture is too small.

I'd Like You To Meet...Jack ❤

Jack had lived in Labrador the first ten years of his life, a sled dog living his days sledding thousands of miles throughout the Labrador landscape he now seeks a loving retirement home in Nova Scotia.

On June 8th-2013 Jack was fortunate to catch a VIPup flight to Nova Scotia via The FedEx Northern Dog Rescue from Goose Bay, Labrador.

The Labrador Husky is an Indiginous breed of Husky & near extiction in Canada with numbers as low as 60, they are a rare breed cherished by the Innu First Nations people of Labrador, Canada.

Within this Link you can reference a detailed description of this breed: http://www.freewebs.com/mysticpathshuskys/labradorhuskys.htm

Bringing Jack to Nova Scotia to find a loving retirement home is the least I could do for such a majestic dog. He is truly stunning, all who meet him are in awe of his spirit. He is loving, gentle, affectionate but most of all he is patient.

Having the privilege of getting to spend as much time as I do with him, he never ceases to keep me engaged. He absolutely loves to be loved, if you stop petting him he will lift his leg, turn his body and gently place his paw on your lap to let you know he's not ready for you to stop loving him.

Jack enjoys walks and responds better to HAAA to commence walking, QIMMIQ to stop, he loves to weave back and forth in front of you to keep you on your toes, it's actually quite a fun, entertaining walk.

He does not eat kibble, he grew up eating frozen venison & beef meat (bones & all) and enjoys cooked hamburger. Jack doesn't know what a treat is, he will take it from you but drop it on the floor unchewed and walk away. He does like braided deer tendons from PetValu as his chew, I've tried everything else to no avail.

In perfect health given that he is ten years of age, his eyes are a little cloudy, his teeth are worn but not damaged and he is 84lbs of solid Labrador Husky.

Jack loves older kids as they typically like to pet him and give him lots of attention. He gets along famously with female dogs, he doesn't bother too much with cats and is co-existing with a male shih-tzu without incident. This gorgeous boy deserves a loving home, he's worked hard his entire life and now needs to rest and enjoy the years he has left.

Jack is not neutered and as he is ten years of age it's not recommended as putting him under anasthetic could cause him great distress. He will let you know when he'd like to go outside by bowing his head on the door, it is subtle but it works for him. He will wait for you to open the door & he calmly heads outside on lead to do what he needs to do. He does not bark, he doesn't howl & will occasionally growl in his sleep.

A home with older children, a female companion and a fenced yard would be ideal for Jack. He deserves a home where he will be showered with affection, where lazy days and Family are the main focus and his needs can be of the utmost importance.

Jack is more than a Husky, he is an amazing boy and he deserves to have a Forever Family. If you would like to meet Jack he is being fostered in Sackville (NS) thankfully by my mom and dad who are spoiling him.

You can contact me (LA Bowden) at: https://www.facebook.com/bowden2you?ref=tn_tnmn/a>n via message or directly on this site.

Age should not define Jack as he is so much more than the years he has lived, he is worth a life you can offer him. I hope you see what I do in him and come forward to give him the best retirement he deserves.

Thank You
Love Jack & me (LA Bowden) 💜

Suspected Animal Broker In Montreal Eludes Investigation

For weeks I have been researching this particular individual on Facebook, he is persistent, relentless, vulgar & a suspected animal broker.

The posts below contain images, prices, buyers & supporters of what is undoubtedly a business that has yet to be held accountable by the Agencies with the power to cease his activity in Montreal, Canada.
The animals listed are mainly from this past weekend with a few posts from April 2013

All of these posts are PUBLIC, with 4 Facebook accounts he uses at different intervals due to people reporting his activity he has not been investigated as of yet. I hope that will change very soon as I am determined to do what is right for the Animals involved in his less than ethical business transactions.

Please SHARE this, if people refuse to take a stand for those that can not stand for themselves than these animal brokering situations continue to exist!

I had received a private message on Facebook from Rian Hicks in regards to my damnation of his brokering and tried to encourage him to post the names of the breeders, veterinarians as well as their contact information, he immediately messaged back spewing profanity. Anyone that questions his activity is publically called out and demeaned in the most vulgar of ways.

Here are a few of said posts:

So due to the public nature of his ignorance, his vulgarity and what I consider non ethical animal brokering I feel it a responsibility to bring this to the publics attention.

It is not Slander, Libel or Defamation of character to use this mans posts against him, they are his words, his pictures, his buyers. Guilt by association is a tragic way to be viewed in public but also necessary, if these people wouldn't buy animals they wouldn't be bred, sought or shipped!

It is appalling to me that he eludes responsibility, that animals in shelters & rescues are dying everyday waiting for loving homes while these business dealings continue to happen.

This has to end!

There is just so much more to this operation than any one person can possibly share. Nearly ALL of these innocent animals have been shipped to Newfoundland & Labrador, a Province shipping Rescue Animals out to Nova Scotia as they try to control animal population in their region.

It is disheartening to say the least that this has been happenning not only for a few days but a few months. How does one man have access to COUNTLESS animals in two days if not from Backyard Breeders or a Mill Facility?

Why numerous Agencies in Montreal & NL Labrador have yet to act is beyond comprehension. Although according to Mr. Rian Hicks he has Lawyers, RCMP, City Police & the Montreal SPCA in his favour, that anyone who complains is a 'joke.'
